I was selected as a mentee for the winter mentorship program conducted by WooTech- Women Wooing Technology from Dec’19- Jan’20 👩‍💻

For those of you who don’t know what WooTech is all about- they hope to provide a mentorship platform to women in technology and guide them in their career. However, the mentorship platform is open to everyone including males, students, working professionals or just anyone curious about technology. Woo-Tech aims to: Encourage and involve more women in technological fields Help students build careers by matching them with mentors in the professional fields Help professions/non-students seeking to move into technical career by matching them with students.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

I worked under my mentor Chestha Kwatra, and with my teammate Sachita Malhotra.

We were supposed to develop a ChatBot which was duly named Eliana which provided assistance to women regarding taboo topics such as menstruation, abortion,STDs etc.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

The tech-stack basically involved two major components:

  1. Flutter
  2. Dialogflow

I had some experience with Machine Learning but the above two technologies were something I wasn’t familiar with. Hence making the project interesting.

Some of our tasks alongside the project included:

  1. Updating the Weekly standup
  2. Following the mentorship repository
  3. Learning how to work with GitHub

The GitHub repository was maintained by our mentor and had ample of resources for each week’s tasks Articles/Blogs,Code,Lectures.

To brief it up our tasks were divided week wise and we were supposed to contribute to the new issues opened up by our mentor:

Week 1: Flutter Installation and Setup, VS Code Setup, Android Studio Setup, building the basic Flutter App.

Week 2: Introduction to the Dart language and widgets in Flutter through building the Startup name generator app and created the login page for our app.

Week 3- Week 7: Learnt how to work with Dialogflow and how to create intents and include it in our app.

Week 8: Finally, we got done with our app and the end result? *drumrolls* a fully functioning app :D We documented everything and wrapped up our project🥳

It was an amazing experience, from getting all worked up by solving the errors to messing up the repo at times- it was a fun journey. Our mentor was ever so supportive of what we did and promptly helped us whenever we were stuck🖤 My teammate was very cooperative and we were compatible as project partners.

If given an opportunity I would love to be a part of this program again!🎉
