WiMLDS Mentorship Program: Week-1
I recently got selected to be a mentee in the Mentorship Program Organized by Women in Machine Learning and Data Science, New Delhi. I am given this opportunity under my very amazing mentor Ashima Suvarna! Who co-incidentally is my university alumna, and I couldn’t have asked for someone better for this journey than her.
We started our week by having a group call first, wherein we played a scavenger hunt as an ice-break game. Ashima created a whole list of cool items to hunt around in our house, and it was super fun. We instantly felt more comfortable with each other. We began by introducing ourselves. I met my two fellow mentees- Ananya and Priyanka.
Our mentor then proceeded to carefully understand our expectations from the program and the reason why we decided to join in as a mentee in the first place. The major reason why I wanted to hop in? I was clueless about my masters' journey. Like, pretty clueless. I expressed my concerns, and she scheduled a call for the end of the week.
I had my first individual call with Ashima yesterday. We discussed various GRE preparation strategy in depth, which I would list down as follows:
- There is no rush. Prepare well for your GRE beforehand, and then only go-ahead to take it. A good duration varies between 1.5–2 months.
- Stick to a certain difficulty level for Quant practice and then move upwards. If you are comfortable with easy-medium questions already, jump onto the advanced ones. Alternatively, if you are starting, you might want to try the easy questions first.
- I am sticking to Manhattan 5lb book for my preparation (psst.. you don’t need to buy it and search for a pdf copy). The verbal section is quite tough there but aptly mimics the actual test. Hence, rather than lowering the bar for the type of questions you want to do, try to get as close as the real test resources.
- If you find the verbal section a tough nut to crack, diversify your sources. Watch shows, catch new words, paste sticky notes all around your house and yay! It might work finally.

That is all for this time, folks! See you around the next week :)
